Obstacles to this Vision include:A monopoly of political and economic leadership and limits to ways to overcome that monopoly. A lack of transparency in the actions of these powerful few. A lack of inclusive planning or resistance to such existing plans. The stranglehold of the state and federal governments on shrinking pools of funding, putting much more burden on local taxpayers. The vast distances between towns with poor transportation options and the resulting lack of cooperation/organization. Real differences between the various parts of the county: Munising isn’t like Chatham; Chatham isn’t like Grand Marais, etc. A culture that values individualism so much that it suspects collective efforts, especially those of government. Valuing money more than community or environment. Stereotyping other community members, especially those with limited resources. Naysayers.
